The High Court (HC) on Tuesday fixed January 23 for delivering its verdict on the death references and appeals in sensational Zubair Ahmed murder case of 2012.
The HC Bench of Justice Bhabani Prasad Sinha and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam passed the order after concluding the hearing on the death references and appeals.
Zubair Ahmed, an honours final year student of English department of Jahangirnagar University, was tortured and stabbed allegedly by some activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on January 8 in 2012. He succumbed to his injuries in a Dhaka hospital on the following day.
The then Registrar of Jahangirnagar University Hamidur Rahman filed a murder case with the Ashulia Police Station in this regard. Investigation Officer Mir Shaheen Shah Pervez submitted the charge sheet in a court of Dhaka on April 8 in 2012 against 13 students of the university.
The court on February 8, 2015 sentenced five accused to death and six others to life imprisonment for the killing.
According to rules, when a lower court awards death sentence to an accused in a case, the judgment and relevant documents are sent to the High Court as a death reference within seven days for examination of the verdict.
As per the rules, the accused filed separate appeals with the HC challenging the lower court verdict. The HC started hearing on the death references and the appeals on January 2, 2018 and concluded on Tuesday.
