Ntv journo murder: HC upholds one’s death, jail sentence of 3 others

The High Court on Sunday upheld a trial court verdict that sentenced a man to death and three others to different terms of imprisonment in a case filed for the murder of Ntv journalist Atiqul Islam Atiq in 2009.
The High Court Bench of Justice Shahidul Karim and Justice Md Akhtaruzzaman delivered the verdict after holding hearing on the death reference and appeals filed by the convicts challenging the lower court judgment.
On June 24, 2014, Speedy Trial Tribunal-2 of Dhaka sentenced mugger Shakil
Sikdar to death, and Abdullah Mohammad Ibne Ali Sarkar Nahid and Md Forkan to life term and Md Khokon to three years’ rigorous imprisonment for killing Atiq.
After that death reference came to the High Court for approval and at the same time the accused filed appeal petition with the High Court against the verdict.
After hearing, the court delivered the judgement on Sunday.
According to the case documents, Atiq, 32, a Video Editor of private television channel Ntv, was shot dead on February 13, 2009 by muggers in Moghbazar area while he was on his way to home.
His brother Abu Bakar Siddique filed a case with the Ramna Police Station in this incident on the following day.
A charge sheet was submitted in the case on August 9, 2009 and the court framed the charge on October 6, 2010. The trial court delivered the judgement on June 24, 2014.
Deputy Attorney General Shahin Ahmed Khan and Assistant Attorney General Mehedi Hasan appeared in the court for the State.
