Zubair murder: HC upholds death for 5 BCLmen, acquits 4 others

The High Court (HC) on Wednesday upheld the death sentence awarded to five BCL activists and life time imprisonment to two activists for killing Jahangirnagar University student Zubair Ahmed.
The court, however, commuted life imprisonment of four others to acquittal as charges brought against them were not proved.
The Bench of Justice Bhabani Prasad Singha and Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam delivered the verdict after hearing death references and appeal petitions of the case.
The death convicts are Khandaker Ashiqul Islam alias Ashiq of Philosophy Department; Rashidul Islam Raju, Khan Mohammad Rais alias Sohan and Zahid Hasan of Zoology Department and Mahabub Akram of Government and Politics Department. Among them, Rashidul Islam filed an appeal petition against the trial court verdict and four others are fugitive, sources said.
Two life imprisonment convicts are Ishtiaq Mehbub Arup and Najmus Sakib, while four acquitted are Mazharul Islam, Shafiul Alam, Kamruzzaman Sohag and Avinandan Kundu. Five of life time imprisonment convicts of trial court filed appeal petitions with the High Court except Ishtiaq Mehbub who is also fugitive.
All the accused youths are the students of Jahangirnagar University and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League.
On February 8, 2015, the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 of Dhaka sentenced five to death and six others to life imprisonment in the murder case. The trial court acquitted two accused.
The High Court completed hearing on the appeals and the death references on January 9, 2018.
Zubair Ahmed, an honours final year student of English Department of Jahangirnagar University, was tortured and stabbed by some Bangladesh Chhatra League activists on January 8, 2012. He succumbed to his injuries in a Dhaka hospital the following day.
Son of Tofael Ahmed of Patuakhali’s Khepupara, Zubair belonged to the BCL group opposing faction allegedly blessed by the then VC Prof Shariff Enamul Kabir.
