Staff Reporter :
A High Court (HC) bench has set Tuesday to hear the bail plea of BNP-backed Mayor candidate Mirza Abbas in connection with a graft case, filed by the Anti-Corruption Council (ACC) last year.
The bench of Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury
and Justice JBM Hassan fixed the date after Abbas’ lawyer Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon placed the bail petition for hearing on Thursday.
Earlier, the HC bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore refused to hear the petition on April 15, saying that there is a specific HC bench to deal with the ACC cases.
The ACC filed the corruption case with Shahbagh Police Station on March 6 last year against the BNP leader for anomalies in plot distribution when he was a minister of BNP government.
Abbas, Mayoral hopeful for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), filed petitions for anticipatory bail in three cases for uninterruptedly taking part in the election campaigns.
The bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore passed split orders in the other two cases in connection with vandalism and arson attack.
The two cases will now be decided in a different HC bench on a later date.
The court on April 13 asked Abbas not to campaign or talk to the media before the disposal of the petitions. It also asked the police not to arrest him in the two cases until the final settlement of the issue.
Abbas, a former Mayor of undivided Dhaka City Corporation, is yet to appear openly in the election campaigns due to the cases with the election less than two weeks ahead.
In the absence of Abbas, his wife Afroza Abbas has taken the charge of the election campaign for him.
