HC surprised over filing of false cases

An inquiry report prepared by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Police stated that involevement of Pir (saint) Dillur Rahman of Rajarbagh area in the capital city has been found in filing 49 cases against a resident of Dhaka’s Shantibagh area on charges of rape, woman repression, human trafficking and others.

After going through the report the presiding judge of the bench Justice M Enayetur Rahim said, “See the activities of a Pir in Bangladesh! What he has done to grab a land! To grab a land he has sued against a person by his followers.”
A total of 49 cases were filed against Md Akramul Ahsan Kanchan, a businessman and also a resident of Shantibagh area in the capital city, on charges of rape, beating, theft and human trafficking. He has to spend 1,465 days in jail in 20 cases filed in 13 districts of the country.
Claiming the cases baseless, Akramul, 55, filed a writ petition with the High Court on June 7 this year seeking its directives to conduct a probe to trace out the plaintiffs involved in these cases.
Upon hearing the writ petition, the High Court on June 14 this year directed the Criminal Investigation Department of the police to find out those who are involved in filing those cases. The court has also asked the CID to submit a report in 60 days on the progress of their investigation in this regard.
The court also directed that a plaintiff has to submit the copy of his National Identity Card (NID) during filing a case in a police station or in a court. The judicial magistrate or the police officer concerned has been asked to be vigilant in this regard from now.
Complying with the High Court direction the CID submitted a report to the High Court on September 6 which came to the cause-list on Sunday. But the court adjourned the hearing for one week.
According to the report, followers of the Pir created pressure upon Akramul Ahsan Kanchan and his brother Kamrul Ahsan Badol to surrender their land and house. As they didn’t transfer the property then the followers started to file cases in different districts against them.
A total 49 cases have been filed against Kanchan in different districts of the country, also read the CID report.
Advocate Emadul Hoque who appeared in the court on behalf of Kanchan said, “Police arrested Akramul Hoque on August 18 in 2013 for the first time in a criminal case filed with Sutrapur police station. Then he had to spend a total of 1,465 days in jail in 20 cases filed in 13 districts of the country on charges of rape, beating, theft and human trafficking.”
The 49th case was filed against him in October last year with the Narayanganj Joint District Judge’s Court. But no plaintiff was found in any of the cases filed against him. Considering the fact Kanchan has been acquitted in 36 cases, and received bail orders in rest 13 cases.
