The High Court on Sunday summoned former Chief Election Commissioner Dr ATM Shamsul Huda on contempt of court charges.
An HC bench comprising Justice Kazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain asked him to appear before the court on June 3 to explain his ‘derogatory’ remarks about the judiciary.
Besides, the court also issued a suo moto rule asking as to why punitive action should not be taken against the former CEC.
The Home Secretary, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner, the Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka, the officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station and Dr ATM Shamsul Huda have been asked to reply to the rule within two weeks.
The English daily ‘The Daily Star’ published a report titled, ‘No rule of law’, on Sunday quoting the speech of the former CEC delivered at a seminar arranged by Centre for Policy Dialogue on Saturday.
In his speech, Dr Shamsul Huda said, “All constitutional bodies, including the Election Commission, the Public Service Commission and the judiciary, have been politicised and incompetent people are being appointed there.”
