Staff Reporter :
The High Court (HC) on Thursday summoned the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prison in Dhaka to appear in the court on March 9 to explain as to why four under-trial prisoners were sent to the court in fetters?
The HC Bench of Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Debnath passed the order when the fettered prisoners were produced in the court.
The police officials, who brought the four prisoners to the HC, said that the Keraniganj jail authorities had sent them in fetters. Usually, an accused is not produced in a court in fetters.
The four prisoners were Habibur Rahman, Moniruzzaman, Nasiruddin and Giasuddin. They have been suffering in jail for more than 10 years in separate cases.
They were brought to the HC as per its Suo Moto order issued on February 7.
Meanwhile, six more under-trial prisoners were produced in the HC yesterday.
They were Faruk Hossain, Selim Mia, Raju Jagannath, Haider Ali, Boshir Uddin and Rafiqul Islam Raja. They have been languishing in the jail for more than 10 years in separate cases against them.
The HC asked the lower court to finish the trial proceedings of the case against Faruk Hossain within next three months and to consider his bail.
The HC passed the order after the case record of Faruk was produced in the court.
As records of the cases of nine other accused were not submitted in the court yesterday despite the court order, the HC asked the authorities for submission on March 9.
On February 5, a lawyer of Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee drew attention of the HC about these 10 prisoners. The HC on February 7 passed order to produce them in the court to consider bail.
