The High Court has summoned 129 loan defaulters from International Leasing and Financial Services Limited (ILFSL), a non-banking financial institution, directing them to appear before it on May 24 and 25 to place refund planning of the borrowed money.
A one-member bench of Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar passed the order after holding hearing on a petition filed by the International Leasing and Financial Services Limited.
The court passed the order on March 16 this year verbally, while the written order was released on Monday.
Barrister Mahfuzur Rahman Milon who appeared in the court on behalf of the ILFSL said his client organization has an outstanding debt of about Tk 18.0 billion from these 129 borrowers.
The lawyer also said they recently filed a petition with the HC seeking its directives to summon these 129 borrowers.
Earlier the same HC bench summoned 286 loan defaulters from People’s Leasing and Financial Services Limited (PLFS), another non-banking financial institution which is under the process of winding up.
Complying with the court order, 164 borrowers appeared in the court on February 23, 25 and March 9 this year. But 122 borrowers didn’t appear.
Then the HC imposed a travel ban upon the 122 borrowers of the People’s Leasing and Financial Services Limited as they did not comply with the court order.
The court asked the law enforcing agencies to remain alert and vigilant so that the 122 borrowers, who didn’t appear before the court in compliance with its earlier order, don’t leave the territory of Bangladesh till further order.
