The High Court on Tuesday stayed trial proceedings of Chittagong University (CU) teacher Maidul Islam until further order, in a case filed under Section 57 of ICT Act on July 24, 2018.
The HC also issued a rule asking the government to explain why the trial proceedings of the case should not be scrapped, said Maidul Islam’s lawyer Hasnat Quaiyum.
The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif and Md Badruzzaman came up with the order and rule after hearing a petition filed by the lawyer seeking cancellation of the trial proceedings.
HC stayed the trial proceedings of the case considering its ground until further order, he added.
A Chattogram court on September 24, 2018 sent Maidul, an assistant professor of the university’s sociology department to jail in the case filed with Hathazari Police Station on July 24, 2018 on charge of defaming Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on social media.
Md Iftekhar Uddin Ayaz, a former executive member of Bangladesh Chhatra League’s CU unit, had filed the case.
