The High Court on Monday stayed a lower court order that granted bail to Sohel Rana, owner of Rana Plaza, which was collapsed killing at least 1,135 people in April, 2013, in a corruption case filed on charge of amassing
wealth from unknown sources. The court said in its order that the stay order will continue for one week after reopening of the court’s regular activities following the ongoing closure.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder passed the order after holding virtual hearing on a revision petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) challenging the lower court’s bail order to Sohel Rana in the case.
Earlier a Special Court in Dhaka on May 17 this year granted bail to Rana in the graft case.
Advocate Md Alamgir Hossain took part in the hearing on behalf of Sohel Rana, Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik appeared for the state and Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the ACC.
Sohel Rana cannot be released from jail following the HC order, said Deputy Attorney General Amin Uddin Manik.
ACC official Mahbubul Alam filed the case with Savar Model Police Station on December 31, 2017 against Sohel Rana on charge of amassing wealth worth Tk 25.44 million beyond known sources of income.
