The High Court on Thursday stayed the Election Commission’s decisions that allowed BNP candidate M Rashiduzzaman Millat of Jamalpur-1 constituency to contest the 11th parliamentary election.
An HC bench led by Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order after hearing on a writ filed by Awami League candidate and former information
minister Abul Kalam Azad.
Lawyer Md Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the petitioner, while deputy attorney general Motahar Hossain Raju for the state. Md Khurshid Alam Khan said that the writ was filed as he was convicted. Returning officer rejected his nomination but later he got back his candidature after filing appeal to the Election Commission.
After hearing, the court also issued a rule on the EC’s decision. Now, Millat would not be able to contest the election, said the lawyer.
