The High Court has sought a report on waste management in Dhaka’s Gulshan.
Dhaka’s Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) has been ordered to submit the report within 30 days.
Justices Md Ashfaqul Islam and Zafar Ahmed also issued a rule on Wednesday after hearing a petition filed on public interest on Tuesday.
The rule asked the defendants to explain why the way sewage and other pollutants from Gulshan area were dumped in the water bodies should not be prohibited. Supreme Court lawyers Omar Sadat and Sima Haider Chowdhury argued for the petitioner.
The government though admitted that the lakes in
Gulshan-Baridhara and Gulshan-Mohakhali were environmentally at risk, but a large portion of waste from Gulshan and Baridhara were released into them through pipelines, they said. The lakes were at the verge of extinction, posing a serious health threat to the residents, added the plaintiffs.
