Staff Reporter :
The High Court on Monday issued a rule upon the respondents to explain in four weeks under what authority Professor M Abdus Sobhan is discharging his duty in the post of Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Rajshahi.
The High Court Bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by a former student of the university, Salman Firoj Faisal.
Rajshahi University VC, Secretary of the Office of the President, Education Secretary, Registrar of the Rajshahi University and four other respondents have to comply with the rule within four weeks.
Salman Firoj Faisal filed the writ petition on July 24 this year.
Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali and Advocate Muzahidul Islam Shaheen appeared in the court on behalf of the writ petitioner.
Advocate Shaheen said that Professor M Abdus Sobhan was appointed for four years as the Vic- Chancellor of the University of Rajshahi on May 7, 2017. But there is no scope to appoint a VC for four years according to the Section 11(2) of Rajshahi University Act 1973. That is why a former student of the university filed the writ petition challenging his appointment. After hearing the High Court issued a rule.”
The lawyers said, “The President can appoint a VC on a temporary basis according to the Ordinance of 1973. To appoint someone permanently or for four years a 3-member VC panel has to be made by the Senators. But the system was not followed in appointing Professor Sobhan as the VC of Rajshahi University.”
