Staff Reporter :
The High Court (HC) on Monday issued a Suo Moto rule to prevent early marriage.
In the rule, the court wanted to know in four weeks as to why Union Parishad Chairmen and Ward Members and Ward Councilors of City Corporations and Municipalities should not be held responsible for every early marriage in
their respective areas. The court also wanted to know in the rule as to why appropriate legal action should not be taken and why termination order should not be issued against those public representatives if any early marriage took place in their areas.
The HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order considering a report published in a bengli daily on October 28 in 2017 under the banner of “24 Ghontay 8 Balyo Bibaho Bondho” (Eight early marriage stopped in 24 hours).
After reviewing the report, the court said, “It appears that our administration could achieve enough success to ensure effective role to prevent early marriage. It is also not acceptable that the people’s representatives cannot play role in stopping early marriage.”
Secretaries to the Ministries of Public Administration, Local Government Rural Development and Cooperatives, Law, Home, Women and Children Affairs and Social Welfare have been made respondents to the rule.
The HC also ordered the Public Administration and Women and Child Affairs Secretaries to send the copy of the order of the rule to the Deputy Commissioners and Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) across the country.
Deputy Attorney General Tapos Kumar Biswas and Assistant Attorney General Aubonti Nurul were present in the court during passing the order.
