HC rule to hold DUCSU polls

The High Court Division of the Supreme Court on Sunday asked the government and the Dhaka University authorities to explain as to why inaction in holding the university’s central students’ union election should not be declared unlawful.
A bench of the High Court Division, comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Abu Taher Md Saidur Rahman passed the order after hearing on a writ petition filed by a former DUCSU Vice-President and General Secretary.
The High Court bench also issued a rule asking the authorities why DUCSU elections should not be held immediately.
The Education Secretary and the Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor, Proctor and Registrar have been made respondents and asked to submit explanations within the next four weeks.
On Thursday, former DUCSU VP Sultan Muhammad Mansur Ahmed, GS Mustaque Hossain and a DU student named Zafrul Hassan Nadim filed the writ petition.
Lawyer Subrata Chowdhury moved the petition on behalf of the petitioners, while Deputy Attorney General Mokhlesur Rahman represented the State.
