Staff Reporter :
The High Court (HC) on Monday issued a rule upon the government as to why the directive should not be given to return the passport of journalist Monir Haider after renewal.
The HC bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order
after hearing a writ petition. The concerned department of the government has to comply with the rule within two weeks.
The court also ordered the Department of Passport and Immigration to submit a report describing the present situation of the renewal application of the passport of Monir Hider, the Deputy Editor of the Bengali daily Manab Zamin, within 10 days.
Advocate Monzill Murshid appeared in the court on behalf of Monir Haider. He said in the hearing that every citizen has the right to get a passport.
According to the documents, Monir Haider is now in USA. He made an application with due process in last September to the Bangladesh Consulate in New York to renew his machine readable passport as its expiration was about to the end. But he failed to get the renewal passport in time from the Consulate officers. Even the officers did not say any reason for not giving the passport.
At this, Monir Haider wrote a letter in last November to the Consul General to know the condition of his passport. But he failed to get any answer. Then, his younger brother Nazrul Islam filed a writ petition with the HC on behalf of Monir Haider.
