Staff Reporter :
The High Court (HC) on Tuesday issued a rule upon the Police, asking them to submit a report before it by June 14 on the actions it had taken against the policemen who were involved in the assaults on the Dhaka University student demonstrators on May 10.
The bench of Quazi Reza-Ul and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman issued the rule after hearing on a writ petition, filed by the Supreme Court lawyer Eunus Ali Akond on the police
action against the students who staged demonstration near the Police Headquarters in the city.
The agitated students demanded the arrest of the culprits who were involved in the sexual harassment against women during the Pahela Baishakh celebration in the Dhaka University area on April 14. But Police came hard on them and indiscriminately beat off the protesters.
In the rule, the court also asked the police authorities to explain as to why legal action would not be initiated against the responsible policemen.
The Home Secretary, Inspector General of Police, DMP Commissioner, DC of Ramna Zone and OC of Shahbagh Police Station were made respondents in the HC rule. Despite having video footage of sexual assaults against the women, police are yet to arrest any of the culprits even after one month of the incident. It is also alleged that police let off some suspects who were caught red-handed by the Dhaka University students from the spot.
Protesting the Police’s inaction and demanding the arrest of the attackers of Bangladesh Chhatra Union Unit of Dhaka University tried to siege the Police Headquarters on Sunday.
At least 34 students, including female students, and the leaders belonging to Bangladesh Chhatra Union, were injured in the police action.
