HC rule over birth regn in Cox’s Bazar

The High Court on Tuesday issued a rule upon the government to explain as to why the inaction of the respondents to take necessary steps to restart birth registration in all the 4 municipalities and 71 union parishads of Cox’s Bazar district should not be declared illegal.
At the same time the court wanted to know the rule as to why the respondents should not be directed to take necessary steps to restart birth registration in all the 4 municipalities and 71 union parishads of Cox’s Bazar district.
The High Court Bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed in this regard.
Supreme Court lawyer and also a resident of Cox’s Bazar Nasreen Siddiqua Lina filed the writ petition with the High Court last week seeking its directives.
Local Government Division Secretary, Registrar General of Birth and Death Registration Department of Local Government Division, Chattogram Divisional Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar district have to comply with the rule within four weeks.
Advocate Nasreen Siddiqua Lina said, birth and death registration functions have been stopped for 20 months in 4 municipalities and 71 union parishads of Cox’s Bazar district in order to prevent the intruding Rohingyas from accepting identity card with citizenship of Bangladesh.
As a result, the local residents of the Cox’s Bazar district are being deprived in getting online birth and death registrations, school admissions, passports, voter lists and so on, the lawyer added.
