The High Court on Thursday issued a suo moto rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the act of denying medical treatment to journalists in Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) should not be declared illegal.
An HC division bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain issued the rule after taking cognisance of a newspaper report on the denial of medical treatment to Gulbar Ali Jewel, photojournalist of a national daily, by RMCH interns.
The HC also asked the respondents why the license of the RMCH interns should not be withheld.
Besides, the HC asked the DG (health) and RMCH director to inform it within two weeks what measures have been taken against the errant interns and report on compliance.
The Chairman of Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC), the Health Secretary, the Director General of the Health Department, the RU vice-chancellor, the RMCH director, the Deputy Commissioner and the Superintendent of Police in Rajshahi have been made respondents to the rule.
