Staff Reporter :
The High Court (HC) on Wednesday issued a rule upon the government to explain in four weeks as to why MP Amanur Rahman Khan Rana should not be granted bail in Freedom Fighter Faruk Ahmed murder case.
The HC bench of Justice Sheikh Abdul Awal and Justice Md Khasruzzaman passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Rana, now in jail, seeking bail in the case. Senior Advocate Abdul Baset Majumder and Advocate Bashir Ahmed took part in the hearing while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam stood for the State.
Earlier several HC benches refused to hear the petition. Member of Awami League Tangail District Committee Faruq Ahmed was shot dead on January 18, 2013.
The judge of the trial court sent Amanur, the AL lawmaker from Tangail-3, to jail after his surrender on September 18 last year in connection with the killing. Now he is in Kashimpur Central Jail.
Later on September 26 last year, the court of Additional District Judge of Tangail Abul Mansur Mia rejected Rana’s bail petition for the second time. Then he filed bail petition in the High Court.
Police submitted charge sheet on February 3 in 2016 against 14 accused including Rana and his three brothers.
