UNB, Dhaka :
The High Court on Wednesday issued rule asking the government to explain in three weeks why its action obstructing airing of the Ekushey TV (ETV) programmes without notice should not be declared illegal.
Passing the rule, an HC division bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice ATM Saifur Rahman, also asked the government to explain why direction should not be given to remove the barrier over airing the programmes of ETV, a private television channel.
The HC came up with the orders, upon a writ petition filed jointly by Laxmipur Press Club president Hossain Ahmed Helal, ETV reporter Faruq Hossain and a TV viewer at Mirpur in the capital, Shafiqul Islam Pial. Some 17 people, including the secretaries of the Home, Information and Telecommunications ministries and the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) have been made respondents to the rule. Barrister Rafique-ul Huq appeared for the writ petitioners.
