The High Court on Tuesday rejected a bail petition filed by four bodyguards of GK Shamim, a top government-listed contractor, in a money laundering case. The four accused are Zahidul Islam, Shahidul Islam, Kamal Hossain and Samsad Hossain.
Besides, the court ordered the investigation officer of the case to complete the probe into the case within four months.
The HC Bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice KM Hafizul Alam delivered the verdict after holding hearing a bail petition filed by.
Advocate Shamim Sarder appeared for the petitioners, advocate Khurshid Alam Khan argued for the ACC and Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik represented the state.
RAB arrested GK Shamim, who is known to be a Jubo League leader, on September 20 last year on charges of extortion and tender manipulation. His seven bodyguards, including the four accused, were also arrested at the time.
During the raid by the elite force at Shamim’s home and office eight firearms, a huge amount of ammunition, Fixed Deposit Receipt (FDR) worth Tk 1.65 billion, around Tk 18 million in cash, stash of US and Singaporean dollars, and some foreign liquor were seized, officials said.
Law enforcers filed three cases against him on the following day— two cases were lodged under Narcotic Control and Money Laundering acts while another one was filed on charge of creating panic among people by brandishing firearms with the Gulshan Police Station. Later on, his seven bodyguards were shown arrested in the money laundering case.
These four bodyguards were rejected bail from a Dhaka Court on December 24, 2019, in the case. Later they moved to the High Court. And the High Court on February 3 this year issued a rule over their bail asking the government and the Anti-Corruptiton Commission to explain as to why the four bodyguards should not be granted bail in the case. After hearing the court delivered the verdict on Tuesday rejecting their bail.
