The High Court on Sunday questioned a lower court’s order that asked the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to freeze bank accounts and seize property documents of Pirojpur’s former Awami League MP AKMA Awal and his wife Laila Parvin in connection with two corruption cases.
The HC issued two separate rules asking the ACC to show causes in four weeks as to why the lower court’s order to freeze bank
accounts and seize property documents of Awal and his wife should not be declared illegal.
The HC Bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir issued the rules after hearing two separate petitions filed by Awal and Parvin, seeking its directives to scrap the lower court order.
In the petitions, they also requested the HC to order the ACC to release their bank accounts and property-related documents, said ACC’s lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan, who received copies of the petitions.
Lawyer Sheikh Awsafur Rahman appeared for the petitioners Awal and Parvin, while lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan argued for ACC.
On May 25, the HC upheld the lower court order that asked ACC to freeze bank accounts and seize Awal and his wife’s property documents.
On September 29 last year, ACC filed the cases with its Integrated District Office-1 of Dhaka. Awal was sued for amassing Tk 33 crore illegally, and Laila for acquiring Tk 10.98 crore illegally.
On December 30, 2019, ACC filed three other cases against Awal and one against Laila for occupying a piece of government land behind the land office in Pirojpur Sadar upazila and building a two-story building on it.
