The High Court on Wednesday ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to hand over all the post-poll violence cases in connection with the attack on the minorities to Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
An HC Division bench comprising Justice Quazi Reza-ul Hoque and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain passed the order after perusing a report on steps so far taken
over the attacks on minorities in 13 districts.
Passing the order, the HC also issued a suo moto rule asking the IGP to submit a compliance report by April 3.
The 13 district where attacks took place after the 10th parliamentary elections held on January 5 are Dhaka, Dinajpur, Natore, Jessore, Gaibandha, Satkhira, Jhalakati, Tangail, Bogra, Pirojpur, Chandpur, Netrakona and Pabna.
Responding to a petition submitted by a lawyer seeking remedy, referring to newspaper reports over the post-poll attacks on the minority communities, the High Court on January 15 asked the authorities concerned to assess the damages caused by the attacks on the houses of minority communities and submit a report before it.
Besides, the HC had also issued a rule asking the government to explain why repression on the minorities should not be stopped and why it should not be asked to take legal steps against the perpetrators.
It further had asked the government to explain why the authorities concerned would not be directed to provide compensation to the victims of attacks.
