HC orders to take punitive action against vandals of sculptures

The High Court on Tuesday directed the inspector general of police and other respondents to take punitive action against the perpetrators who were involved in vandalism of the sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the instigators in accordance with the Constitution and other relevant sections of the prevailing law.
The court also asked the director general of Islamic Foundation and khatib of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque to spread out the knowledge among publicthat the matter of installation of the sculpture of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is not connected with any religious spirit at all, rather it is a symbol of independence.
The High Court bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order after holding hearing on a petition filed seeking
HC directives for the protection of all sculptures in the country, including the sculpture of Bangabandhu.
The court also issued a rule asking the government bodies to explain as to why their inaction to take punitive action against the perpetrators who were involved in vandalism of the sculpture of Bangabandhu and the instigators in accordance with the Constitution and other relevant sections of the prevailing law should not be declared illegal.
Home secretary, religious affairs secretary, liberation war affairs secretary, inspector general of police, director general of Islamic Foundation and khatib of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque has been asked to comply with the ruling.
Advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque and advocate Nahid Sultana Juthi took part in the hearing on behalf of the petitioner, while Attorney General AM Amin Uddin represented the state.
Uttam Lahery, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed the writ petition on Sunday last in the concerned section of the High Court Division.
