A division bench of High Court on Tuesday ordered to stop sand lifting from Shahid Abdur Rob Serniabad Bridge, popularly known as Dapdapia Bridge area and issued rule against concerned officials.
The order was given by the division bench consisted with Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal in response of the writ petition filed on public interest by Bangladesh Environment Lawyers Association
Adv Iqbal Kabir Liton moved the petition on behalf of BELA and Adv Motahar Hossain Saju, deputy attorney general stand for government.
The court also issued rule against 12 high officials including DC,, officials of BIWTA, Environment of Barisal, secretaries of land, water resources and environment ministries and other concerned officials.
They asked to reply that why order would not be issued to declare sand lifting at Char Aicha and Char Abdani moujas as illegal and step would not be taken to prevent illegal sand lifting from Kirtankhola River and saving the navigability of the river.
The court also asked the opponents to reply why impact on environment would not be considered before extracting sand and clearance from the environment department would not be taken before leasing any area for sand lifting.
The opponents ordered to reply the rule within next four weeks.
Advocate Iqbal Kabir of BELA , said the leased sand lifting places situated within one kilometer of the Shahid Abdur Rob Serniabad Bridge and sand lifting could not be permitted within that limit of surrounding any bridge.
