The High Court on Sunday directed the Department of Environment (DoE) to shut down 27 structures which have no environmental clearance certificates, near Shyampur and Postogola on the bank of Buriganga River in 15 days.
The structures include: Chandni Textile Mills, TPI Textile Processing Industry, Nurani Textile Mills, A Majid and Sons Dyeing, Kadamtoli Dyeing and Printing, Khadiza Textile Processing and Printing Indurstry, Agrani Dyeing and Printing, Suborna Dyeing and Printing, Masud Textile and Shiba Textile Processing.
The list also included: Sonia Dyeing and Printing, Jeddah Dyeing, Aziz Metal, Alif Metal, Messars Agrani Molding, Annex Corporation/Orbit Metal Industries, SM Electroplating Works, Mohammadia Pipe, Perfect Ware, MJ Dyeing, Rafsan Dyeing, Mollina Textile Mills, Messers Khan Redimix, Messers Shams Dyeing, Motlob Iron, Medicare Diagnostic and Hospital and Riverside Hospital.
The HC Bench of Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order after hearing on a writ petition filed by a rights organization, Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh filed in 2011.
In a show cause, the court asked the Managing Director of Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA) to explain in 15 days as to why legal action should not be taken against him for making false statement about sewerage line connecting the WASA line.
Advocate Manzill Murshid, who appeared in the court on behalf of the writ petition, said, the HC earlier sought reports from the DoE, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) and WASA MD about the structures without having valid environment clearance certificates, sewerage lines and WASA lines.
Following the HC’s earlier order, the DoE submitted a report on Sunday to the HC saying that there are 27 dying factories and private hospitals which have no environmental clearance certificates near Shyampur and Postogola areas on the river bank.
WASA MD also submitted a report recently saying that there are no sewerage lines connecting the Buriganga River. But BIWTA in a report said there are several sewerage lines that connected the river, which cause pollution in the city.
After going through the reports, the HC passed the order and fixed December 2 for passing further order on the issue.
