HC orders to shut 14 hospitals, diagnostic centres in city

The High Court (HC) on Tuesday directed the government to immediately shut down 14 hospitals and clinics for running them illegally in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain as to why they should not be directed to remove those hospitals and clinics from the area and as to why they should not be directed to take appropriate legal action against the persons responsible for operation of those medical institutes without having valid licenses.
It also wanted to know in the rule, as to why the inaction of the respondents to shut down those hospitals and clinics should not be declared illegal.
The hospitals and clinics are BDM Hospital and Diagnostic Center, Shebika General Hospital, Jonosheba Nursing Home And Diagnostic Center, Life Care Nursing Home, Royal Multispecialty Hospital Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah Manoshik and Madokashakto Hospital, Manmita Mental Hospital, Plazma Medical Service and Clinic, Shefa Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Islamia Mental Hospital, Crescent Hospital and Diagnostic Complex, Makka Median General Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, New Well Care Hospital and Bangladesh Trauma Specialized Hospital.
The HC Bench of Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice Ahmed Sohel passed the order and issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh seeking necessary order to shut down the hospitals as they have no valid required licenses.
Advocate Monzil Murshed appeared for the petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Mokhlesur Rahman represented the government.
Director General of the Department of Health and Executive Magistrate of RAB have been asked to implement the court order.
Health Secretary, Director General of Health Services, Chairman of Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council, DMP Commissioner, Chief Executive Officer of DNCC, OC of Mohammadpur Poilice Station and Executive Magistrate of RAB will comply with the rule.
After the court order, Advocate Monzil Murshed said, “A report was published in a newspaper recently under the banner of ’26 in 500 meter: 14 are illegal hospitals’. Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh filed a writ petition adding the report as public interest litigation.”
