Tangail police firing: HC orders probe report submission by 60 days

The High Court has ordered the submission of a probe report on the police firing at Tangail’s Kalihati Upazila within 60 days.
It also issued a rule asking whether the law-enforcers’ measures to disperse demonstrators were within legal limits. Secretary to the home ministry, IGP, Dhaka Range DIG, Additional DIG (discipline), Tangail’s Deputy
Commissioner and SP, and Kalihati Police OC have been told to explain.
The High Court bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Zafar Ahmed issued the rule on Wednesday after hearing a petition by the Bangladesh National Women Lawyers’ Association (BNWLA) Executive Director Salma Ali.
BNWLA President Fauzia Karim Firoz represented the petitioner, while Attorney General Mahbubey Alam argued for the State. On Sep 18, locals at Kalihati Upazila clashed with police while protesting against the alleged rape of a woman in front of her son.
Police opened fire to disperse the demonstrators, killing three, while another of wounds a day later.
