Tampaco tragedy: HC orders owner to surrender in 7 days

The High Court (HC) on Wednesday asked the owner and five officials of Tampaco Foils Factory to surrender to a lower court in seven days in two cases filed in connection with the factory blast that killed 39 workers and injured several others in September.
The accused are Owner Syed Mokbul Hossain, Managing Director of the factory Syed Tanvir Ahmed, General Manager Shafiqur Rahman, Manager (Admin) Manir Hossain, Deputy Managing Director Alamgir Hossain and Manager Abu Hanif.
The court, however, granted anticipatory bail to Mokbul’s wife Sajeda Parvin Hossain and his daughter Syeda Abida Hossain for eight weeks.
The HC bench of Justice A K M Asaduzzaman and Justice Zafar Ahmed passed the order after hearing on two separate petitions filed by the eight accused seeking anticipatory bail in the cases.
They submitted the bail petition appearing in the HC bench on November 21 and 22.
At least 39 people were killed in a fire incident at Tampaco Foils Factory in Tongi BSCIC industrial area on September 10.
Two days into the incident, two cases were filed against the eight persons with Tongi Police Station on charges of killing and attempt to murder.
Advocate Abdul Baset Majumder took part in the hearing on behalf of the accused and Attorney General Mahbubey Alam for the State.
