The High Court (HC) on Monday ordered law enforcers to immediately arrest a man who allegedly raped a mentally challenged woman in Comilla in December last.
The court also directed police to record the complaint on raping a mentally challenged woman in 48 hours.
The Superintendent of Police of Comilla district and Officer-in-Charge of Bangora Bazar Police Station were asked to submit a report before the HC by January 19 after complying with the HC directives.
The HC bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice J B M Hassan passed the order as suo moto after a report published in a Bengali daily on January 7.
SC Advocate Md Muzibur Rahman placed the report in the HC bench for passing necessary orders on Monday.
Muzibur told the reporters that Nazrul, son of Kuddus Mia of Sreekail Union had reportedly raped the mentally challenged woman.
The victim’s mother filed a complaint with the local police station in connection with the incident, but the police did not record it as a case, he said.
The lawyer said that, the HC also issued a rule on the matter. The HC asked the government to explain as to why the initiative of village-arbitration in this regard should not be declared illegal.
