The High Court on Wednesday ordered the law enforcers to take initiatives for arresting five accused, including a Chinese, and freezing their passports over the misappropriation of Tk 25.94 million from National Bank Limited.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice K M Hafizul Alam passed the order after hearing a petition filed seeking quash of the case by an accused and former Executive Vice President of the National Bank, Shahbuddin Chowdhury.
Rejecting the quash petition, the High Court ordered the trial court concerned to dispose of the case within six months.
The five accused are National Bank’s former Senior Vice President Abdul Wadud Khan,
Chinese national Yang Wang Chung, Al Rahman, Monsurul Hoque and Md Golam Mostofa.
Advocate Abdul Motin Khasru appeared in the court on behalf of the quash petition, Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan and Barrister Md Nowsher Ali Mollah appeared for the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) while Deputy Attorney General AKM Aminuddin Manik stood for the state.
Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan said, “Executive Vice-President of the National Bank Shahbuddin Chowdhury filed a petition with the High Court seeking quash of the case. After hearing the HC rejected the petition as it was not pressed in the court. Besides, the court ordered the trial court to dispose of the case within six months.”
AKM Aminuddin Manik said, “The High Court ordered the law enforcers to take initiatives for arresting five accused and freezing their passports so that they cannot flee abroad.”
Anti-Corruption Commission filed the case on June 17, 2017, accusing six persons on charge of misappropriating of Tk 25.94 million from National Bank’s Dilkusha branch.
It was said in the charge that the accused persons embezzled the amount by opening back to back letters of credit in favour of a company named the Sinfa Nitas Limited which was launched on basis of fake documents.
The ACC pressed the charge sheet in the case on June 24, 2018. The case is under trial in the special court 5 of Dhaka.
