The High Court has ordered a jetty, under construction on the Meghna at Brahmanbaria’s Ashuganj, to be removed.
Justices Salma Masud Chowdhury and Md Habibul Gani gave the order following a preliminary hearing for a writ petition on Thursday.
The petition was filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh on Feb 11 on the basis of a report published in Daily Kaler Kantho with headline -“Illegal jetty on Meghna, a joint venture of Awami League and BNP.”
It said, two local politicians from Awami League and BNP have taken hold of a 400 feet area on the Meghna river to build a jetty for transporting products to a power station without any permission.
A lower court already passed an order against the construction but that was flouted, said the report.
The High Court on Thursday ordered the construction in the area stopped and all materials removed.
Brahmanbaria’s District Commissioner, District Superintendant of Police, BIWTA director (port-traffic), director (planning), chief engineer and the Ashuganj OC have been asked to carry out the order within seven days. The court also asked it should be informed within four weeks of the action taken to implement its order.
