HC order to probe mismanagement in GJCC

The High Court on Thursday asked the authorities concerned to form a committee to investigate the reported mismanagement of Gazipur Juvenile Correction Centre (GJCC)
 following some adolescents’ ‘horrible protest’ by self-gashing.
Taking cognizance of a newspaper report over the incident, an HC division bench comprising Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and ABM Altaf Hossain passed the order.
The HC also asked the GJCC to form a three-member probe committee comprising the Director General of Social Welfare Directorate, the Deputy Commissioner and the Police Super of Gazipur district. It sought the report within a week.
Besides, the HC issued rule suo moto asking the GJCC to explain why its mismanagement should not be declared illegal and how the adolescents’ could take cough syrup in police custody.
Among others, the Social Welfare Ministry Secretary, the IGP, the DG of Social Welfare and the DC and the SP of Gazipur have been made respondent to the rule.
Earlier, M Assaduzzaman, a lawyer, had drawn attention to the bench and submitted the report in this regard published in vernacular daily Prothom Alo on Thursday.
The national daily reported that some 20 adolescents of the juvenile correction centre cut their bodies with sharp objects in protest against mismanagement of the centre on Tuesday. Later, they were taken to Tongi Government Hospital for emergency treatment.
