Abdul Baset Majumder, vice-chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council, has been rebuked in court for misleading police into releasing a suspect linked to an attempted murder.
The senior lawyer was only able to leave the High Court after the suspect was returned to the police on Tuesday afternoon.
Majumder intervened when police were preparing to take away Awami League leader Abdul Kuddus to jail after he was refused bail in the case
originating from Chittagong’s Bayezid Bostami.
Majumder, a member of the ruling party’s advisory council, confused the policemen to have Kuddus released, witnesses said.
He then asked Kuddus, joint general secretary of the Awami League unit of Chittagong’s Jalalabad, to leave the court premises.
The lawyer was immediately summoned by Justice Md Miftah Uddin Choudhury and ANM Bashir Ullah. They chided the lawyer and asked him to immediately bring back the suspect.
Majumder was seen quiet. The case was not his but was being handled by a junior lawyer, which is all he said in his defence.
The court then threatened to lock up lawyer Rezaul Karim if he failed to bring back Kuddus.
Majumder remained in detention in court until Supreme Court Bar Association President Joynul Abedin and Secretary Mahbub Uddin Khokon, both BNP-leaning lawyers, came to his rescue.
They apologised to the judges on behalf of Majumder, their rival in politics, and assured them that Kuddus would be sent back into police custody.
“Majumder was allowed to leave the courtroom after the suspect was returned to custody after half an hour,” said Deputy Attorney General AKM Maniruzzaman Kabir.
The case against Kuddus says he is a drug dealer who hacked and injured local businessman Nazimuddin at Bayezid Bostami in the port city of Chittagong. Filed on Apr 12, the case accuses 28 individuals.
