UNB, Dhaka :
The High Court on Sunday issued a rule asking the government to explain in four weeks why it would not direct the cable operators to stop airing the three Indian satellite television channels – Star Jalsha, Star Plus and Zee Bangla.
After a brief hearing on a public interest litigation
(PIL) writ petition, an HC division bench comprising Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice M Ashraful Islam issued the rule.
Information secretary, Home secretary, Inspector General of Police, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) chairman, Bangladesh Television DG and GD Jadu Broadband Ltd chairman have been made respondents to the rule.
The PIL writ petition was filed by Syeda Shahin Ara Laily, a Supreme Court lawyer, seeking to stop the operation of the three Indian TV channels being aired in Bangladesh as those have been casting adverse impact on the social life of the country’s people.
The petitioner in her writ petition also said that operation of the Indian satellite channels should be banned here as Bangladeshi television channels are not allowed to be aired in India.
Earlier, on August 26, a separate High Court division bench had rejected the same PIL writ petition ‘as being not pressed’.
