HC issues rule on tortured journalist

Staff Reporter :The High Court (HC) on Tuesday issued a rule upon the government asking it to explain as to why torture of journalist ABM Mizanur Rahman, the Baufal Correspondent of Bangla daily Prothom Alo, in the Police custody should not be declared illegal.The court also wanted to know as to why the tortured journalist should not be given compensation and the punitive action should not be taken against those who were responsible for the torture of the journalist. Eight persons, including Inspector General of Police, Police Superintendent of Patuakhali and Officer in-Charge of Baufal Police Station, have been made respondents in the rule.They have been given two weeks time to submit their reply. The bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Razik Al Jalil issued the rule, after hearing on a writ petition filed by the victim’s father Abdus Salam on March 23.In the petition, Salam sought the court’s directives to the government to punish the responsible law enforcers, who violating the law tortured his son in custody.
