The High Court (HC) on Wednesday issued a rule upon the secretary of the Ministry of Education and Chairmen of 10 Education Boards to explain in four weeks as to why their inaction to examine the answer sheets of Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations by competent and experienced teachers should not be declared illegal.
In the rule, the court also asked the Ministry and Education Boards to show cause why they should not be directed to give enough time to the examiners for evaluating the answer sheets. The High Court bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice J B M Hassan passed the order and issued the rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Advocate Asaduzzaman Siddique and Advocate Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan of the Supreme Court.
They submitted the petition on January 1, saying that some answer sheets of SSC and HSC examinations were examined reportedly in a faulty manner and the candidates got poor marks. When those answer sheets were re-evaluated, they got more number.
In the meantime, few candidates reportedly committed suicide, the petitioners said claiming that this happened as the examiners were not allocated enough time. During hearing yesterday, petitioners’ lawyer Advocate Manzill Murshid told the court there is a rule for examining the answer sheets of public examinations by competent and experienced teachers, but it is not properly followed.
Therefore, students are deprived of deserving results, he said.
The Education Secretary and Chairmen of Education Boards of the country have been made respondents to the rule.
