Staff Reporter :
The High Court on Sunday granted bail to a union parishad member in a case filed for gang-rape and torture of a woman in Noakhali’s Begumganj in September last year.
The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order following a bail petition filed by the accused Moazzam Hossain alias “Sohag Member”.
Moazzem’s lawyer Md Oziullah told the media that the HC granted bail to his client as he has been in Noakhali jail for three months although the maximum punishment for his alleged offence-of negligence in discharging responsibility as a public representative-is six months’ imprisonment.
The lawyer said Moazzem will get released from jail if the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court does not stay the HC’s bail order.
The gang-rape and torture happened at Joykrishnapur village of Eklashpur union on September 2 last year. A video footage of the incident went viral on social media in the first week of October same year.
