HC grants anticipatory bail to 18 BNP leaders

The High Court on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to 18 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its associate organisations including convener of Dhaka City South Unit of BNP Abdus Salam for one month.
The 18 leaders and activists have been asked to surrender in the trial courts concerned after one month.
The High Court Bench of Justice
Md Habibul Gani and Justice SM Mozibur Rahman passed the orders after hearing five separate petitions filed in this regard.
Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kazal appeared in the court hearing on behalf of the BNP leaders. Lawyers Nure Alam Siddique, Mohammad Rokanuzzaman Suja, Al Amin and Ershad Hossain Rashed also represented the petitioners.
The police arrested at least 30 activists of the opposition party and its associate bodies and the Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal, on February 6 after a clash between police and Chhatra Dal at Naya Paltan in the capital.
Police on the following day filed a case against more than 450 leaders and activists of the BNP and its associate bodies, over the clash. The bail seekers were also named in the case filed by the police.
Chhatra Dal central president Fazlur Rahman Khokon, general secretary Iqbal Hossain Shaymol, Juba Dal central president Saiful Islam Nirob and general secretary Sultan Salahuddin Tuku are also among the petitioners who have secured the bail.
