The High Court on Tuesday fixed November 15 for hearing an appeal filed by former president H M Ershad challenging a lower court verdict that jailed him for three years in a corruption case.
The bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus set the date, as the
Anti-Corruption Commission’s lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan in August prayed to the HC for hearing the appeal for its disposal.
Khurshid Alam Khan said that the HC granted two weeks time in response to a petition of Ershad. At the same time the court also reminded them that further time-petition would be not allowed.
According to the documents of the case, the then Bureau of Anti-Corruption (BAC), which became defunct after the formation of the ACC in 2004, filed the case against Ershad for misappropriating Tk 1.91 crore when he was the president from 1983 to 1990.
Ershad, also Chairman of the Jatiya Party, was convicted by a Dhaka court in 1992 in the graft case. The court sentenced him to three years imprisonment and ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate the money and his Toyota Land Cruiser car. The same year, Ershad filed an appeal, challenging the verdict, which the HC stayed. Later, Ershad had got bail in the case.
