HC drops writ probe of Tonu murder case

The High Court has ruled out a writ petition filed praying judicial probe into the killing of Sohagi Jahan
Tonu from its hearing list.
The HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Razik-Al Jalil passed the order on Monday. The bench took the decision, as investigation into the case is on, petitioner counsel Eunus Ali Akond told the media.
In a media briefing later on, he said, “I will move the petition in another HC bench later.”
Eunus Ali Akond, a lawyer of the Supreme Court, filed the writ petition on April 4 praying for the High Court’s order to hold judicial inquiry and to arrest the killers within 24 hours.
The lawyer also prayed for Tk 30 lakh as compensation for payment by the government to the victim’s family. He also requested for a rule asking the government to explain as to why its inaction over arresting the killers should not be declared illegal.
Sohagi Jahan Tonu, 19, a second year student of History Department of Comilla Victoria Government College was found lying dead in Comilla Cantonment area on March 20 after she went out of her residence for private tuition.
The victim’s father filed a case against some unidentified people with Kotwali Model Police Station. The case was transferred to the CID on March 28. During its investigation, the CID interrogated 38 people, including Tonu’s family members, army personnel and doctors.
The killing of the college student sparked off widespread protests across the country.
