The former RAB officer is one of the 35 people charged for the killings of seven including City Councillor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Kumar Sarkar.
The victims were abducted on April 27 last year and their bloated bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya River several days later. MM Rana’s bail petition was included in Sunday’s cause-list of the High Court bench of Justice Quamrul Islam Siddique and Justice Gobinda Chandra Tagore.
One of the judges cited personal reasons and declined to hear the matter. SM Abul Hossain stood for the defence while Deputy Attorney General Md Bashir Ullah represented the state. “One of the judges of the bench declined to hear the matter due to personal reasons and asked the matter to be shifted to another bench,” Bashir Ullah told bdnews24.com. On April 8, police pressed charges against 35 people, including three former RAB officers, local Awami League leader Nur Hossain and 31 others.
Former naval officer MM Rana, who was deputed to elite police unit, had filed the bail petition on February 19 this year, according to his lawyers.
