Rajeeb murder: HC confirms death sentence to 2 accused

The High Court Division of the Supreme Court yesterday upheld the verdict of a subordinate court that sentenced two persons to death and six others, including the chief of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), to imprisonment of different terms, in the case filed in connection with the murder of blogger Ahmed Rajeeb Haider.

Justice Md Jahangir Hossain delivered the verdict on Sunday in his crowded courtroom. The death sentenced convicts are Redwanul Azad Rana, a fugitive, and Faisal-Bin-Nayeem.  
On March 27, the High Court set Sunday to pronounce the verdict on the death reference and appeals in the murder case. On that day, Deputy Attorney General Zahirul Haque Zahir and Assistant Attorney General Atiqul Haque Selim represented the State in the court.
Earlier, on January 9, the apex court kept the murder case waiting for verdict after the hearing on the death references and appeals filed by the convicts challenging their sentences. Hearing in the case began on November 7, last year.
Blogger Ahamed Rajib Haider, an architect by profession, and also an activist of Shahbagh based Ganajagaran Mancha demanding death penalty to war criminals, was hacked to death at Pallabi in the capital on February 15 in 2013.
On December 31, 2015, the Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka handed down death penalty to two persons and different imprisonment terms to six others, including Mufti Jasimuddin Rahman, 45, Chief of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), for killing Rajib.
The death sentenced convicts are Md Faisal Bin Nayem alias Dweep and Redwanul Azad Rana.
Mufti Jasimuddin Rahmani, Chief of ABT, was found guilty of provoking Rajib’s murder through his sermons and he was sentenced to suffer five years in prison.
