UNB, Dhaka :
The High Court on Thursday commuted the death sentence of Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) member Mamunur Rashid alias Zahid to life imprisonment in a case filed in connection with the grenade explosion in the Gazipur police super office in 2009.
An HC bench comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain passed the order disposing of the death reference and an appeal filed by the JMB man against the death penalty.
In its observation, the court asked the inspector general of police to take necessary steps so that law
enforcers do not parade any accused before the media before producing him to court.
Talking to reporters, deputy attorney general Sheikh AKM Moniruzzaman Kabir said the bench sentenced Zahid to life imprisonment commuting his death penalty in the case. A team of Tongi Police Station in a drive had arrested Zahid along with five live grenades and some bomb-making elements on February 20, 2009.
When handcuffed Zahid was paraded before the media at a press conference at the Gazipur police super office on the day, he blasted a grenade kept on a table, leaving 13 people, including policemen and journalists, injured.
On March 13, 2012, the Speedy Trial Tribunal-4 of Dhaka sentenced Zahid to death in the grenade explosion case. Later, the JMB functionary filed an appeal with the HC challenging the death sentence.
