Journo Farhad killing: HC commutes death penalty of 2 accused

The High Court (HC) on Tuesday awarded life imprisonment of the two accused in the sensational journalist Farhad Khan murder case.
The lower court gave them capital punishment.
The HC ordered the Inspector General of Police to investigate also the matter of releasing Shafiqul Islam, who was detained with mobile SIM card in this case.
The HC Bench of Justice Md Ruhul Quddus and Justice A S M Abdul Mobin delivered the judgement yesterday after conclusion of the hearing on the death reference and appeals in the case on Thursday.
Advocate Munsurul Hoque Chowdhury, Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru and Advocate Subrata Saha appeared for Nazimuzzaman Yon and Razu Ahmed, while Deputy Attorney General Moniruzzaman Rubel argued for the State.
Farhad Khan, 60, Senior Assistant Editor of Bangla daily Janata, and his wife Rahima Khanam, 55, were killed in their rented flat in Nayapaltan area in the capital on January 28 in 2011. Abdus Samad Khan, younger brother of Farhad, filed a murder case with Paltan Police Station accusing unknown persons.
On October 11 in 2012, a Dhaka court gave death sentence to two persons for murdering journalist Farhad and his wife Rahima.
The condemned convicts were Nazimuzzaman Yon, a nephew of the slain journalist Farhad Khan, and Razu Ahmad, a friend of Nazimuzzaman.
Judge A B M Sajedur Rahman of Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 of Dhaka handed down the verdict.
Zaman and Razu, who are now in jail, filed separate appeals with the HC challenging the trial court verdict.
