The High Court on Thursday directed the investigation officer (IO) of the journalist couple Sagar-Runi murder case to submit a report in this court citing the latest situation of the probe on March 4, 2020 or before.
At the same time the court also directed the IO to submit a report on the involvement of accused Tanveer Rahman in the case.
The High Court bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order after hearing a case filed in this regard.
The High Court exempted Tanveer Rahman from the personal appearance in the trial court, but by a lawyer. The court fixed March 4, 2020, for passing further order on the matter.
Advocate Fawzia Karim Firoze appeared in the court on behalf of Tanveer Rahman while Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappy stood for the State.
In its observation, the HC said, “It is a matter of frustration that the mystery of the murder is not revealed through investigation. RAB failed to identify the culprits, arrest them and bring to trial though a long time has already passed. If the RAB fails to find out the mystery of this sensational case, their success in preventing terrorism, drugs, illegal arms and adulteration will be somewhat diminished.”
“The court hopes that the RAB will conclude the probe of this case soon and disclose the real secret of the murder and identify the real culprits and bring them under trial. None desires that this elite force bears a liability for failure in finding out the secrecy,” also observed the court.
Earlier on October 20, the same High Court bench summoned the investigator of the case filed for murder of Sagar-Runi as he couldn’t submit the probe report of the case even in last seven years while hearing on a petition filed by an accused of the case, Tanveer Rahman, seeking quash of the case in his part.
Complying with the HC order, the IO appeared in the High Court on November 11 with all the documents of the case.
Sagar Sarowar, News Editor of private TV station Maasranga, and his wife Meherun Runi, senior reporter of another channel ATN Bangla, had been killed at their rented flat in the capital’s West Rajabazar on February 11 in 2012.
Their only son Mahir Sarowar Megh, then 5, was at home at that time. After the murder, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police started an investigation into the case filed in this connection.
Later, the case was shifted to DB police. However, on April 18, 2012, the High Court, in an order, shifted the case to RAB for investigation as the former had expressed its inability to resolve the case.
At least eight people including Rafiqul Islam, Bakul Miah, Masum Mintu, Kamrul Hasan alias Arun, Abu Sayeed, two security guards of the couple’s house Palash Rudra Paul and Enamul Hoque and the couple’s “family friend” Tanveer Rahman had been arrested but Tanveer got later freed on bail.
