Staff Reporter :
The High Court on Monday ordered BNP leader Ishraque Hossain, a candidate of the last Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) election, to surrender before a trial court in a case filed for not submitting his wealth statement to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The court also called for the documents of the case.
The HC Bench of Justice Md Salim passed the order after holding hearing on a petition filed by the
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) challenging a lower court verdict that acquitted the BNP leader from the corruption charges brought against him in the case.
After hearing, the court admitted the petition filed by the ACC and also asked the concerned lower court to consider granting bail to Ishraque if he surrenders.
Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan who appeared in the court for the ACC said they had filed the petition with the HC on Sunday last against the lower court verdict.
A Dhaka court on November 23 last year acquitted BNP leader Ishraque Hossain in the case filed for not submitting his wealth statement to the ACC.
Judge of the Special Judge’s Court-4 of Dhaka, Sheikh Nazmul Alam, delivered the verdict in presence of Ishraque, son of former Dhaka City Corporation Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka, at a jam-packed courtroom.
The judge had said that he found no satisfactory evidence to convict Ishraque. The prosecution failed to produce vital witnesses to prove the charges. Moreover, the notice was not duly served. So, the accused was acquitted, the judge said.
