RPO provision: HC appoints 7 amici curiea for opinions

The High Court yesterday appointed seven amici curiea to submit their opinions on a writ petition that challenged declaring a single candidate winner contested in the election. On February 16, Jatiya Party leader Khandaker Abdus Salam filed the writ challenging a provision of the ‘Representation of the People Order’ that authorized the Election Commission (EC) to declare winner a candidate who is found to be the only valid candidate in any poll. The court with Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Mohammad Khurshid Alam on hearing the writ issued the rule on the authorities concerned asking their explanation. Senior lawyers of the Supreme Court Dr Kamal Hossain, Barrister M Amirul Islam, Barrister Rafiq-Ul Hoq, Mahmudul Islam, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Rokanuddin Mahmud and secretary of SUJAN, an NGO, Badiul Alam Majumder were appointed as amici curiae for their opinions, the counsel for the petitioner told reporters.
