The High Court (HC) on Thursday stayed for three months the effectiveness of the schedule for holding elections to elect Councilors of 18 new wards and six reserved seats of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
The HC bench of Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md Faruque passed the order and issued a rule after hearing on a writ petitions filed challenging the election schedule.
The elections were scheduled to be held on February 26.
The court also issued a rule asking the Election Commission and the government as to why the schedule issued by the EC for holding the elections should not be declared illegal. Mozammel Miah, a voter of Demra, a new ward of DSCC, filed the writ petition on Wednesday with the HC citing some irregularities in the Election Commission’s election procedure.
Advocate Kamrul Huq Siddiquee appeared in the court on behalf of the petitioner.
